Casa Mariposa Event Venue & Villas

Love is in every detail

The heart of Casa Mariposa Boutique Guest House is its colonial Mexican courtyard with its large fountain and tropical garden. It provides seclusion and soothing sounds and smells. Once little stick, an enormous Plumeria tree commands the courtyard providing shade and a sultry scent. Surrounded by three courtyard bedrooms and the main house, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into old world Mexico. Brightly colored hammocks, swaying in the ocean breeze, beckon one to dig in and chill. Mango, papaya and Sandia colors adorn the interior walls with whimsical folk art collected from our travels. Secluded from the outside world, you’ll lose yourself in nature, color, art, and old world charm. Our guests always say they wish they could take the courtyard home with them. The memory  always brings them back for another visit.

Another hidden gem of Casa Mariposa is its unique location behind the Valley Land Fund’s bird sanctuary. This small piece of wooded earth on South Padre Island is a mecca for migrating birds seeking refuge from strong winds or a long migration over water. Fresh water and plenty of wooded protection provide dozens of species a restful haven before continuing their migration. A short list includes many species of warblers, indigo buntings, painted buntings, several species of orioles, a variety of hummingbirds and many more. Casa Mariposa has been honored to host prestigious wildlife photographers such as Larry Ditto and Richard Moore. Other birders working on their life list have included former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Casa Mariposa Boutique Guest House is ideal for birders who would like a private viewing of this birder’s paradise.

Artful, Charming & Unique

Venue History - The story of Casa Mariposa

Casa Mariposa Event Venue is an extension of Casa Mariposa Boutique Guesthouse on a grander scale. Originally built for Steve’s realty business, Steve Gomez and Associates, it is now become an event venue, perfect for small wedding receptions, large parties or concert venue, this truly is one of a kind. Our concept for our new building was to fuse Mexican, Indian and Moroccan influences and elements to the structure. Steve coined the term, “Morroxican”. We essentially built our office building around a pair of hand carved teak Afghan doors dating back centuries framed by a pair of hand carved sandstone window screens. Steve and I shared a passion to create and to make things aesthetically beautiful. We honored the beautiful hand crafted pieces that had been discarded and left to ruin. One of my favorite pieces is a coffee table that was originally used as the saddle for an Indian elephant. It is elaborately carved and still bears the iron rings once used to attach the saddle.

Steve and I wanted to support local businesses throughout the valley. Vida Antiques provided us with gorgeous Indian columns as well as unique pieces that artfully adorn our guest rooms. Steve’s office was appointed with a beautiful set from Designer Discount Showroom. I was pleasantly surprised to find high quality and variety at our local tile, light, and bath supply stores. Another  great source of architectural salvage is Balinska’s Imports in Houston. We purchased old Indian columns, doors and stained glass from former palaces that had fallen into ruin.

Again, love is in the details as evidenced throughout the Steve Gomez Building. Coastal Contractors supplied us with the very best craftsmen in every medium. A stunning handcrafted mahogany door graces the entrance to Casa Mariposa Event Venue. I was speaking to the artisan that made the doors and I was explaining my vision for the vanities. I explained to him with many hand gestures that I did not like straight lines. I wanted curves like waves, movement, flowing and sexy. He looked at me a bit perplexed, smiled and said, “Sketch it out”. I sketched the designs I wanted and was simply amazed by his craftsmanship. His work far exceeded my expectations.

Another of my favorite architectural elements is the turret in the Event Venue. Towering over the courtyard of crushed granite its soft green fountain provides a water feature for the courtyard. Climbing its spiral staircase leads to a second floor veranda where you are greeted by a water fountain and some amazing sunsets. The veranda provides a very romantic spot for a moonlight dinner or a small party.

My favorite bathroom of Casa Mariposa is called the mermaid bath. We used blue glass tiles inspired by beach glass collected from our travels. Our Jacuzzi tub is surrounded by nooks filled with antique glass bottles. Lighting and privacy is provided by glass blocks on the exterior wall. The glass sink resembles an abalone shell and sits atop one of the custom curved cabinets.

I don’t think they make the color beige in Mexico. Like the people, everything is vibrant and alive and our color inspiration came from the people, the beauty, the colors, and the soul of Mexico. Steve and I were honored to be welcomed into these homes by new friends. They taught us much about being industrious, humanity, humility and much more. We cherished these moments.

This building was a massive undertaking and could not have been completed without the collaborative efforts from Joe and Anita Baker of Coastal Contractors along with Steve and myself Joe hires only the best and we were fortunate to have such an incredible hard working crew that could see our vision. I have heard it said it takes a village and I can attest that it most certainly does. The building had not yet been totally finished prior to Steve’s passing so he was never able to see his vision realized. My brothers, I will call them, all came to help me complete Steve’s dream without accepting compensation.
